Chlorine Shock Treatment : The secret to crystal-clear pools for modern healthy living
What Is Chlorine Shock Treatment — and Why Daily Chlorine Isn’t Enough ?
Shock treatment involves adding a high dose of chlorine at once to deeply cleanse the water—like a Big Cleaning Day for your pool.
Example of Chlorine Shock Reaction
The real culprit is chloramines. When chlorine binds with sweat, sunscreen, or organic waste, it forms chloramines, which cause unpleasant odors, eye irritation, and reduced disinfection efficiency. Normal chlorine levels cannot eliminate them. Shock treatment breaks down chloramines chemically, removing odors and restoring fresh, hygienic water.

Professional Shock Treatment Steps
For best results and to protect your pool, follow these expert guidelines:
- Choose the right time: Perform shock treatment in the evening or at night to prevent UV rays from breaking down chlorine.
- Balance pH first: Adjust pH to 7.2–7.6 so chlorine works at 100% full efficiency.
- Proper application: Never throw chlorine granules directly into the pool—it can damage surfaces. Dissolve in a plastic bucket first, then slowly pour evenly around the pool.
- Run circulation system: Keep the pump running 8–12 hours and avoid swimming until chlorine levels drop to normal (below 5 ppm).
When Should You Shock Your Pool?
As a general rule, shock treatment is recommended every 6 months. In addition, shock treatment should be performed more frequently if water conditions become abnormal or if the pool experiences heavier-than-normal usage—such as conditions similar to water-park usage—or when a private pool is used by a large number of guests who are not the regular pool owners, including situations such as:
- After pool parties or periods of heavy swimmer load
- After heavy rainfall, which introduces contaminants and disrupts chemical balance
- When water becomes cloudy or early signs of green algae appear
- When unpleasant or “chlorine-like” or stale odors are noticeable
Chlorine shock treatment is one of the most effective pool-care techniques—and it’s easier than many people think. The key is choosing a high-performance chlorine from a trusted manufacturer and brand, and ensuring it is the DCCNa type, which dissipates naturally in water similar to drinking-water treatment.
This is in contrast to TCCNa chlorine, which leaves residual chlorine in pool water for prolonged periods and may pose greater health risks over time.
A globally trusted and widely used option is NISSAN Chlorine (D.C.C.Na 60%) from Japan. This premium chlorine is commonly used in household and pool sanitation worldwide. It features a mild chlorine scent, dissolves rapidly within 30 minutes, leaves no sediment residue, and is highly effective for disinfecting swimming pools and general water use. With low corrosive properties, it does not damage tile coatings or pool equipment components.
Dosage example:
Using 250 g of DCCNa per 100 cubic meters of water will produce a chlorine level of 1 ppm for a target level of 10 ppm, add 2,500 g of NISSAN DCCNa per 100 cubic meters of pool water.
Once added, run the filtration system continuously without interruption during the shock treatment process. Monitor chlorine levels regularly. When chlorine drops to 3 ppm, recheck the pH level to ensure it is suitable for swimming before reopening the pool for normal use.

Understanding effective pool-care techniques is essential for both pool owners and pool maintenance professionals. Neglecting water quality issues or failing to address problems correctly can lead to greater difficulties over time, shorten the lifespan of your pool, and create recurring maintenance headaches.
However, with proper knowledge, correct water management, and regular professional maintenance, your pool can remain clear, inviting, and healthy for long-term enjoyment.
