There is no single answer for every pool. The right operating schedule depends on water volume, actual flow rate, the number of swimmers and the water treatment system installed.

Before setting a timer, the first step is to determine whether the system can circulate enough water through the filter and treatment equipment. You can then choose operating hours and pump speeds that support water quality while using energy efficiently.

What Does a Pool Pump Do?

A circulation pump moves water from the pool through the filtration and treatment system, then returns it to the pool. This carries debris to the filter and helps distribute disinfectant throughout the water. However, the pump itself does not disinfect the water. Effective pool care requires circulation, filtration, disinfection and balanced water chemistry working together. Simply running the pump longer may not solve a problem caused by a clogged filter, insufficient disinfection or poor water circulation within the pool.

Understand Turnover Time Before Setting Your Pump Schedule

Turnover time is the time required to circulate a volume of water through the filtration system equal to the water volume used in the calculation. The basic formula is:

Turnover time (hours) = Water volume (m³) ÷ Filtration flow rate (m³/hour)

For example, if the water volume used in the calculation is 48 m³ and the actual flow rate through the filter is 8 m³/hour:

48 ÷ 8 = 6 hours per turnover

The system therefore needs approximately six hours to pass 48 m³ of water through the filter.

One turnover does not mean that every part of the pool water has passed through the filter exactly once. Filtered water continuously mixes with the water in the pool. Turnover time is therefore a measure of circulation capacity, rather than confirmation that all the water has been completely filtered or disinfected.

Use the actual flow through the filtration system in this calculation. Exclude flow from separate spa jet or waterfall pumps if that water does not pass through the filter. For overflow pools, consider the water volume in the balance tank according to the project’s applicable design criteria.

How Is Turnover Time Different from Daily Pump Runtime?

A six-hour turnover time does not automatically mean that the pump should run for six hours a day. You also need to determine the daily circulation requirement and allow sufficient operating time for disinfection.

When the flow rate is constant, the daily volume passing through the filter can be calculated as follows:

Daily filtered water volume = Actual filtration flow rate × Daily operating hours

Using the same example of a water volume of 48 m³ and an actual flow rate of 8 m³/hour:

Daily pump runtime

Volume passing through the filter

Calculated turnovers

6 hours

48 m³

1

12 hours

96 m³

2

These figures illustrate the calculation; they are not recommended schedules for every pool. The appropriate number of turnovers and operating hours must be assessed against pool usage, water quality and treatment requirements.

If a variable-speed pump runs at different speeds throughout the day, calculate the volume circulated during each period using that period’s flow rate and duration, then add the volumes together. Total operating hours alone may give a misleading picture of circulation.

Residential Pools, Public Pools and Onsen Baths Have Different Requirements

A private pool used by a few people has different treatment demands from a hotel or public pool used throughout the day. The number of swimmers, the duration of use and the amount of contamination entering the water all affect the workload. As usage increases, filtration and disinfection systems must handle a greater load. Turnover requirements should therefore account for the type of pool, bather load and water temperature.

For onsen baths, the type of water system also matters. A bath that recirculates water through a filter operates differently from one that continuously receives fresh water and discharges used water. Swimming pool turnover figures should not be applied directly to every type of onsen.

Some public facilities may need to operate their circulation systems continuously, 24 hours a day. For example, the CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) calls for continuous operation of filtration and recirculation systems at public aquatic facilities. Projects in Thailand must follow the requirements applicable to their location and facility type; international guidance does not automatically replace local requirements.

Select a Pump by Flow Rate and System Head, Not Horsepower Alone

The question “What horsepower pump do I need for a 50 m³ pool?” does not provide enough information to select the right pump. Horsepower, or HP, does not tell you the actual flow rate a pump will deliver once installed.

Pumps with the same horsepower can deliver different flow rates. Actual flow also depends on the total resistance of the system, known as total dynamic head (TDH). Pipe length and diameter, elbows, valves, filters and treatment equipment all contribute to this resistance.

Pump selection should therefore use the pump performance curve to establish whether the pump can deliver the required flow at the system’s TDH. The filter and other equipment must also be suitable for that flow rate. Actual flow may decrease as the filter or debris baskets become clogged, so routine maintenance and flow checks are just as important as setting the operating schedule.

Is It More Efficient to Run at High Speed Briefly or at Lower Speed for Longer?

A variable-speed pump allows operation to be adjusted to the system’s needs. Routine filtration may be carried out at a lower speed, while backwashing can require a higher speed to achieve the flow specified by the filter manufacturer.

In a suitable system, reducing pump speed can lower energy consumption even when the pump runs for longer. However, flow must remain sufficient for filtration, surface skimming and the operation of connected equipment. To compare efficiency, consider both the volume circulated and the electricity consumed, rather than operating hours alone.

Daily electricity consumption (kWh) = Actual electrical power input (kW) × Operating hours

For a pump operating at several speeds, calculate the energy consumed during each period and add the results. This gives a more realistic basis for estimating running costs.

Saltwater Pools Need Enough Time to Generate Chlorine

A salt chlorinator needs sufficient water flow through its cell and suitable operating conditions to produce chlorine. Reducing pump runtime can therefore reduce the amount of chlorine generated each day.

For illustration, assume a chlorinator is rated at 20 grams per hour and produces chlorine at that rate throughout operation at 100% output:

Daily chlorine production time

Calculated chlorine production

5 hours

100 grams per day

3 hours

60 grams per day

These figures represent theoretical production under the stated assumptions. They do not indicate the free chlorine concentration remaining in the pool. Chlorine is consumed by contaminants and lost through environmental factors, while actual production also depends on the equipment’s operating conditions.

Even when enough water passes through the filter, the chlorinator may not run long enough to meet the pool’s chlorine demand. Free chlorine and pH should be tested, with runtime or output adjusted as needed.

How to Assess the Right Pump Schedule for Your Pool

Start with the pool’s actual conditions, then monitor performance after setting the schedule:

Establish the design water volume. Include relevant parts of the system according to the project’s design criteria.

Assess pool usage. Consider the number of users, usage periods, water temperature and environmental conditions.

Determine circulation requirements. Match them to the pool type and applicable requirements.

Check actual flow and TDH. Confirm that the pump, filter and treatment equipment work together at the required flow.

Set operating hours and pump speeds. Allow sufficient capacity and time for both filtration and disinfection.

Monitor and adjust. Track water quality, flow rate and energy consumption.

Periods of heavier use, heavy rain or increased debris may call for a review of the operating schedule and water treatment settings. If the water becomes cloudy or chlorine levels fall outside the appropriate range, investigate the cause rather than simply increasing pump runtime.

Effective pool care starts with a flow rate and operating schedule suited to the entire system. This helps provide adequate filtration and treatment while managing energy use over the long term.

Whether you need to assess your current pump schedule, select equipment for a new pool or upgrade an existing system, the POOL&SPA team can help plan a circulation system that suits your space and the way you use your pool.

How many hours a day should you run your pool pump?
